We came together as a community to honor Matariki with an evening of connection, remembrance, and forward planning. Guided by the principles of Matariki, the event strengthened our bonds and celebrated shared heritage.
The evening was filled with traditional activities. We shared kai (hangi), sang waiata, and watched kapa haka performances, deepening our connections to each other and the land, fostering a sense of belonging and shared responsibility.
Participants brought photos of loved ones who had passed since the last rising of Matariki, paying tribute to their memory in a moving act of remembrance.

Brent Harpur (from Oamaru), is a legally blind, self-taught cartoonist, art educator & entertainer , who has taught cartooning for 33 years.
Brent took two workshops on 23rd April for children, adults, neuro diverse and intellectually disabled persons, where his 'dad jokes' were actually funny and the skills he shared helped all to improve their own drawings and caricatures.
Everyone left feeling proud of what they had done and inspired to follow their creative passion of drawing.
The Taieri Youth/Rangatahi Hui (for 12yrs - 18yrs) held on Wednesday 24th April 2024 was a huge success. With 46 youth attending, the mini expo-style event included youth-focused organisations who showcased their youth programmes using interactive activities.
We heard from inspiring speakers, played games, participated in outdoor activities like Laser Tag, shooting the rubber ducks, popping balloons with dart throwing and cricket!
Volunteer South shared about the benefits of volunteering, youth had a go at playing the drums, learning to use an AED & got to make poi and made hope bracelets.
Special guest Brent Harpur, a talented cartoonist from Oamaru, drew caricatures and gave a lessons! Brent really enjoyed the day and estimates he drew 32-35 caricatures and 25-30 animals.
And let's not forget delicious hot chocolates and yummy food that kept everyone fuelled throughout the day!
A huge thank you to Youth East Taieri for organising this with Taieri Network, to Brent Harpur and to the organisations who attended and really engaged with the youth: Taieri College Students Head Girl (Kate) & Head Boy (Cameron), Grace and Alisha. Thanks to St John, Dunedin Youth Council, Volunteer South, Te Whare Tapa Whā o Taiari, Deaf Aotearoa, ComCol - Youth Services, Students Against Dangerous Driving (SADD), Sport Otago, WEKA, Mega Zone.
